Vietnam’s Coconut Industry Enters a Golden Era

Vietnam’s coconut industry is experiencing remarkable growth, transforming from a traditional agricultural sector into a dynamic export powerhouse. With strong global demand, supportive government policies, and expanding cultivation areas, coconuts are becoming one of the country’s most promising agricultural commodities.

Vietnam currently has around 200,000 hectares of coconut plantations, most of which are located in the Mekong Delta, the country’s primary coconut-growing region.

Bến Tre Province, widely known as the “Coconut Capital” of Vietnam, leads the industry and is expected to generate approximately USD 500 million in coconut export value by 2024, accounting for more than half of the nation’s coconut trade.

Expanding Coconut Cultivation Across Vietnam

Other provinces are also expanding coconut cultivation:

  • Cần Thơ manages about 12,500 hectares, producing roughly 95,000 tons annually.
  • Bình Định currently has 9,353 hectares and plans to expand to 10,000 hectares by 2030.

Recognizing the sector’s potential, the Vietnamese government has identified coconut as one of the six key industrial crops targeted for development by 2030. The strategy aims for 30% VietGAP-certified production to improve product quality, traceability, and export competitiveness.

Rapid Growth in Coconut Exports

The export value of Vietnamese coconuts has increased dramatically over the past decade:

  • USD 180 million in 2010
  • USD 900 million in 2023
  • Expected to exceed USD 1 billion in 2024

A major milestone was reached in August 2024, when Vietnam signed a protocol with China allowing the export of fresh coconuts. China, one of the world’s largest coconut consumers, uses around 4 billion coconuts annually, creating enormous opportunities for Vietnamese exporters.

Exports to China alone are projected to reach approximately USD 250 million in 2024.

Growing Demand from Global Markets

Vietnamese coconuts are also gaining popularity in major international markets such as:

  • United States
  • European Union
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Canada

Thanks to their high water and meat content—approximately 5% higher than the global average—Vietnam currently ranks among the top 5 coconut exporters in the world.

A Sustainable Agricultural Industry

Beyond its economic value, coconut cultivation contributes strongly to environmental sustainability. Every part of the coconut tree can be utilized, including:

  • Food and coconut oil production
  • Coconut fiber and eco-friendly materials
  • Activated carbon and industrial products
  • Agricultural substrates such as cocopeat

Coconut plantations also help absorb significant amounts of CO₂, supporting Vietnam’s Net-Zero 2050 climate goals.

With expanding markets, increasing production, and growing global recognition, Vietnam’s coconut industry is entering a new era of opportunity and sustainable development. 🌴
